Elie Wiesel Visual Arts Competition
Congratulations to Kate Laroue’s students, Ella Tesstore and Gavin Ventura for wining first place in the senior division of the 2019 Elie Wiesel Visual Arts and Multi-media Competition! Seven other Tallwood students had their art pieces chosen to be displayed in the annual student show: Kristwen Peterson, Almire Mae Saulo, Mackenna Morgan, Sara Lant, Jacob Hagee Roque, Kiana Lee, and Alexis Hendricks.Three students also reached the finalist level in the writing competition: two in poetry and one in essay. Congratulations to Gunner White, Raphael Taylor, and Anabella Mendigorin!

Congratulations to our VTFT students! The Researching Learning Challenges team (Khyannia Banks, Mimi Dang, and Bethany Hansel) placed FIRST in the state and will advance to Nationals in Dallas! For their competition, they researched intellectual disabilities (including an interview with Vicki Turner!) and wrote a paper on their findings, then presented solutions about how to best serve this group of students.

Tallwood High School was selected to receive the 2019 Model Partnership Award for its collaboration with the Sister Cities Association of Virginia Beach. Thank you to 
Greg Falls and Jessica Windish for their work with the Sister Cities Association. They will be recognized at the Community Engagement Awards Reception on April 25.

Congratulations to 
Lisa Ericson’s Catering students who won first place in the Prostart State Restaurant Management Competition! They will compete in the national competition in Washington, D.C., May 8 – 10. Please support them in their fundraising activities coming soon.

Good Luck to these young ladies and their advisor, Amisha Jefferson, as they advance to the FBLA State Leadership Conference in Reston, VA, April 5-7.

Both the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble earned all superior ratings at the VBODA State Concert Band Assessment Adjudication.  Out of a possible 28 categories, each band received 26 A’s and 2 B’s. 
With the well-deserved earned ratings, Tallwood has been selected as a VA Honor Band for the 11th time in a row and 14th time in school history.


Congratulations to our DECA students who competed in the State DECA Competition over the weekend and advanced to Nationals. Maddie Filio and Taylor Wright advanced to compete in the DECA International Career Development Conference in Orlando on April 27. Thank you to Cassidy Mulé for her leadership.

The Tallwood High School Model Judiciary Team has advanced to the second round of the Model Judiciary program sponsored by the Virginia Bar Association. Mock attorneys 
Kyle Nanney, Annasa Cuffee and Jabari Smith did an outstanding job in arguing the case Long v. Craig. Special thanks to witnesses Christopher Evans, Alyssa Taylor and Gavin Diette.

Congratulations to Kate Laroue for being selected as the Outstanding American History Teacher for Tallwood High School. She will be honored at the Daughters of the American Revolution awards ceremony on February 21.

Congratulations to our 
One Act Play team for earning second place in the VHSL One Act Play Festival. As a result, the team will compete in Regionals on Friday, February 8 at Bayside High School. Thank you to Michael Camenisch for coaching our young actors.

Congratulations to junior 
Sophia Mae Lomeng who qualified as a semi-finalist for the fully funded study abroad scholarship run through the U.S. State Department's NSYLI program. After a final round of interviews, Sophia Mae will be placed with a host family in either South Korea or Indonesia for six weeks of immersive language study this summer. Sophia Mae already speaks English, Chinese, Ilocano, Tagalog, and Japanese.


Congratulations to 
Sierra Belford for placing first and to Collin Devlin for placing second in the Poetry Out Loud contest. They will represent Tallwood at the Regional Poetry Out Loud competition. Ludan Ahmed placed third and will serve as an alternate. Great work, Lions! 

Congratulations to the Tallwood High School Marching Lions for earning straight superior ratings at State Marching Assessment.  This is the first step toward the band earning the distinction of VA Honor Band for this 2018-19 school year.  This is the 12th year in a row that Tallwood has earned straight superior ratings!
